Primed + Conditioned
Psych & Such | 11 May 2021
I created a short presentation for work that discusses what we can do if/when we have primed and conditioned our thinking in ways that are not serving us well.
3 takeaways and considerations from that work:
- If my thinking is too easy, it may be due to relying too heavily on old and outgrown beliefs and distorted thinking patterns.
- TRY: Gathering information that is relevant and appropriate to the specific circumstances you find yourself in, rather than relying on generalizations that unlikely fit your current situation.
- If my thinking is too fast, it may be due to heuristics (or shortcuts) we apply to help us make quick decisions and avoid cognitive overload.
- TRY: Asking others who have been previously successful in what you are attempting and brainstorm various processes that best fit the complex problem at hand.
- If my thinking is too convenient, it may be due to holding onto righteousness and failing to put forth effort to change your mind.
- TRY: Identify and start from a place of common ground from those who oppose views, then listen as if you're wrong (rather than assuming you're right).
