Thermostats + Diversity Benefits
Psych & Such | 24 May 2021
There is often a thermostat war that happens in my office. I'm that person in the office who is always cold. Besides when I sleep, I'm comfortable at about 73 or 74 degrees. Others in the office are always proclaiming how hot it seems. They are comfortable around the 68 to 70 degree range. This doesn't bode well for having to share common spaces. Needless to say, I have resorted to keeping a heat dish nestled comfortably under my desk.
Temperature, while objective in nature, is not perceived equally among us. This is a nice reminder that we all are not wired the same. We have different preferences, tailored experiences, and unique ways of operating in the world. This is fantastic! Imagine a world where we were all the same. Cloned over and over again, and "cut from the same cloth." This would mean we wouldn't need others around us to help us experience life in new, intriguing, and abundant ways.
So yes, there will be inconveniences you must learn to embrace that come along with the differences embodied and expressed across people (such as what temperature to keep the thermostat on). However, the benefits of human diversity drive life as we know it! And those benefits always outweigh and buffer any inconveniences one might encounter.
