Coffee Burns + Reminders

Coffee is my jam.  I am a bit addicted.  So much so that I subscribe to a coffee club that sends me monthly bags of coffee originating from all over the world.  I won't even describe my reaction when I have been alerted that my coffee has arrived in my mailbox.  Let's just say it's extra.

This morning I was in the process of making my first cup of coffee for the day (I usually drink about three.  And yes, I realize that is probably too much...).  My coffee process goes as follows:

1. Put kettle on to boil water

2. Pick out beans

3. Grind beans

4. Set up aeropress

5. Pour boiling water over grounds

6. Stir for about 60-90 seconds

7. Press down

Voila!  Coffee is made.  Now, you'll notice in #4 of my routine I mention an aeropress.  An aeropress is similar to a traditional French press, but uses air pressure to fully-release all of the aroma and flavor of the coffee.

This morning my process didn't go quite as planned.  Apparently, I didn't set up my aeropress correctly and when I went to the press step of my routine, everything exploded on me.  I mean coffee on me AND the entire kitchen.  Coffee even shot right onto my shirt and quickly soaked through to my skin.  So now I'm burned.  Not hospital-worthy burned, but I am burned.

How often do we get caught up in doing the same things day after day, only to find one day our "usual" and "processes" backfire?  For me, my simple coffee process could have gone off without a hitch had I focused in and attended to setting-up my aeropress correctly.

It serves us well to be mindful in the big and small.  Novel and mundane.

Today try re-evaluating even your most trusty routines and tasks to ensure you aren't allowing misplaced focus or distraction to burn your productivity, progress, or enjoyment.
