Serena + Legacy
Psych & Such | 9 AUG 2022
Today, Serena Williams more than hinted that her retirement is near. My reaction and emotions are mixed. On one hand, I am elated that she will finally be able to live her life without tennis. A life she's never known. On the other hand, I'm mourning the fact that we are losing one of the best athletes my generation (and arguably, all generations) has (have) ever known.
Serena left a legacy of:
- Introducing more diversity to the sport of tennis
- Fighting for equality between men and women's sports
- Living authentically as a human, woman, person of color, sister, daughter, spouse, mother, competitor, influencer, creator, etc.
- Advocating for marginalized groups and individuals
- Disempowering external circumstances and barriers
- Adopting a growth mindset through constant learning and development
- Winning and excellence
- What legacy are you leaving behind?
- Are you playing enough, or are you only working?
- Are you working enough, or are you only playing?
- What details and truths would your "player card" list about you?
- Have you progressed or contributed to your industry in a meaningful way? If so, how?
- Have you impacted your inner circle in profound ways? If so, how?
During a recent interview, Serena mentioned she knows her tennis play has an expiration date (paraphrased). Before your expected (or unexpected) retirement arrives, consider how you can make the most of your life and journey. Consider how your work, actions, and decisions impact those around you in the present, and paves the way for those in the future. How will people talk about your departure?
My hope is that each of you will retire with as much grace, respect, love, peace, and support as Serena will.
