Coffee Sludge + Steps

Just yesterday, I made a terrible cup of coffee.  Really what I made was sludge.

My preference for making coffee is to use an aeropress or Frenchpress; however, the quick, convenient, and less messy method is via general coffee maker.  Making a cup of coffee with a general coffee maker doesn't require much:

  1. Step 1: Measure out the grounds
  2. Step 2: Measure out the water
  3. Step 3: Hit brew button
I botched Step 2.  If I had to assume, I was multitasking during this step.  It was likely that I was pouring water at the same time as talking, or wiping down counters, or day dreaming...who really knows??

Needless to say, I made thick sludge (i.e., too little water).

As humans, how often do we mishandle various steps that make up our lives?
  • Skip critical conversations with the important people in our lives?
  • Diminish or remove recovery activities that would reset our body, minds, and souls?
  • Manipulate or get out of difficult and challenging work that would lead to key development?
  • Treat our eating, sleeping, or physical activity as "icing on the cake" versus a necessity?
If you find you are haphazardly approaching important steps in your life, reflect on and consider the following:
  1. What triggers disallow the behavior(s) I need and/or facilitate the behavior(s) I don't need?
  2. If I better approached my day and tasks, what would I be gaining?  What would I be losing?
  3. How would taking certain life steps more seriously align with my core values?

My coffee blunder yesterday came at a cost: extra time and other valuable resources (i.e., coffee grounds, water, electricity).  Being more present and engaged in my day-to-day creates a happy cup, and maximizes who I am, what I have to offer, and the experiences I own.
